I Heart Distance

Just two guys on the end of the pier, fishing and drinking Sun Drop. You can’t get any more southern than this, y’all!

This week’s theme on I Heart Faces is “From a Distance.” I wish this could be the theme every week. I would certainly have a lot of photos to choose from, since most of my photos are snapped from a distance, around my town and are often candid, random shots of strangers.

Because, let’s face it, it’s easier to take a photo of a stranger from several feet away.

I snapped this photo last summer on Johnny Mercer’s Fishing Pier in Wrightsville Beach, NC. The end of the pier is my favorites spot on this earth. I did not edit this photo at all – it is SOOTG (straight out of the camera!)

Ahhh….Summer!

Nothing says “Summer” like a day at the beach, y’all.

These photos were taken on Memorial Day at Wrightsville Beach, NC. My husband and I had the rare holiday off and decided to spend the morning in our beach chairs with a couple of  Bloody Marys and our camera. We had fun taking random photos of people of all sizes, shapes and descriptions just relaxing and hanging out at the beach.

This is for a meme called Summer Stock Sunday. It’s been gone for a while and I’ve missed it!

If you’d like to participate, post a picture of anything that says summer to you, and link back to Around the Island so that other folks can find you. Have fun with it, and take time to visit the other blogs to see what summer looks like all over the world.

You Never Know: Why I Always Have My Camera Ready

Today’s topic on the Daily Post challenge is to describe your best road trip. Last March, my husband and I bought a 2008 Victory Red Corvette, and since then we have been on several road trips. The most recent one was a four-day power drive in January –  to Key West and back.

I took a zillion pictures, but I’m taking a blogging break today. I’m just going to share a few candid shots I got of a complete stranger on the bridge somewhere between Craig Key and Duck Key.

This is why I always keep my camera ready in the car. ‘Cause you just never know what you might see out the window, y’all.

I’ve read that the proper etiquette when photographing strangers is to ask their permission. That’s not easy when you’re sitting in your car shooting them through the window. But This Guy noticed me snapping away through my zoom lens and waved. I took that to mean it was OK.

We had pulled off the road to take photos of the bridge when he passed by. Pretty soon we were back in the car and crossing the bridge ourselves.

I wonder where he was going with his little friend, don’t y’all?

I Heart Friendly Faces On The Beach

This week’s photo challenge on I Heart Faces is “Best Face Photo from January 2011.” It is a People’s choice award this week, so please go over there and vote for me!

This is a photo I took at Wrightsville Beach on January 1st, 2011. As it was a nice day for a walk on the beach, there were a lot of people walking off their New Year’s Day dinners in the late afternoon, with their dogs. This girl and her cute dog caught my eye. She was friendly so I asked her if I could take her photo. I love how it turned out, especially the lighting. I only wish I had gotten her name and email address, so I could send the photos to her!

I Heart Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The folks over at I Heart Faces are doing their part – the theme this week is “Pink.”

I like to take pictures of strangers when they aren’t looking. With my zoom lens, I’m able to zoom in on the action and get some very candid shots. This lady was emerging from her car in downtown Wilmington, on an ordinary spring afternoon. I was standing there, with my zoom lens on my camera and presto! I had an interesting shot of a woman wearing a hot pink feather boa. See? This is why I love taking candid shots of strangers. You just never know.

Who wears feather boas anyway, y’all? Do you think she might be a breast cancer survivor? By the way, have you had your mammogram this year?

You Capture Water

I’ve been trying to participate in a photo forum on Thursdays. Brought to us by Beth, at I Should Be Folding Laundry (me too, by the way), it’s called You Capture. Every week there is a new theme. This week it was “Water.”

And yes, I know today is Friday. I work a swing shift schedule, so I’m doing the best I can, y’all. I just got done working three nights and today I will try to transition back to days. It helps to go to the beach and get lots of fresh air and sunshine.

All of these photos were taken at my favorite place in the world, Wrightsville Beach, NC. I always take my camera and work on my photography skills. You never know what you might capture.

I am passionate about trying to capture photographs of the water. It really isn’t an easy subject to capture!

Lip gloss at the beach? Obviously, she’s southern.

I would spend every day here if I could, just looking at the water and walking on Johnny Mercer’s Pier.

In fact, today we’re going right back here. What better way to spend a few hours drinking bloody marys trying to figure out what day it is?

I Heart B&W Drama

This week’s photo challenge on I heart Faces is Dramatic Black and White.

I took this candid stranger photo accidentally. I was trying to capture the mural on the wall of a building in downtown Wilmington, NC. To my dismay, right as I snapped the camera, this man had ridden into my shot. He doesn’t look very happy, but I don’t think he realized he was being photographed.

What I was sure was going to be a ruined photograph actually turned out to be one of my favorites. I think the expression on his face is rather dramatic and the mural behind him is an interesting background.
